LOT #1 Extremely Rare 2 – Gallon Stoneware Merchant Jug, crisply stamped “From R. ELLIOTS CASH STORE PORT ROBINSON C.W.”.  A circa 1840’s highly ovoid form, 13 ¼”H, with cobalt brushed floral plant decoration and cobalt highlights to capacity number and merchant marks. In amazing overall condition with clean coloring. Very faint 1” surface star right and below decoration and fine hairline at base of handle and lip of spout. NOTE! This piece is one of only 2 known, the early ovoid form is very rare in Niagara merchant stoneware! Port Robinson is an early Niagara village built along the Welland Canal!

LOT #2 Rare ¼ – Gallon Stoneware five-line Merchant Finger Jug, 8 ¾” H. Stamped clearly in large font with cobalt highlighting “CHAS. BAMPFIELD GROCERIES WINES & LIQUORS NIAGARA FALLS ONTARIO”. Mint, very clean color with no stains or imperfections!  Definitely hard to find Niagara piece!

LOT #3 Rare ¼ – Gallon Stoneware five-line Merchant Finger Jug, 8 1/2’” H. Stamped “MURRAY & RILEY GENERAL DEALERS IN GROCERIES PROVISIONS WINES LIQUORS CHINA GLASS & STONEWARE ST. CATHARINES”. In excellent condition, light vertical stain lines below stamp.

LOT #4 Very fine ¼ – Gallon Stoneware four-line Finger Jug, standing 8 7/8” H. Stamped “R.C. FITZGERALD WINES & LIQUORS 48 ST. PAUL ST. ST. CATHARINES” in large font with cobalt highlighting. In excellent clean condition, with shallow 3/8” flake to left side of spout.

LOT #5 Very fine ¼ – Gallon Stoneware three-line Finger Jug, standing 8 ¾” H. Stamped “E. D. DORR WINES & LIQUOURS ST. CATHARINES” with cobalt highlighting. Very clean gray color, some iron spots, with minor glazed kiln in-firing imperfection at base, right side.

LOT #6 Early ½ – Gallon Stoneware Jar standing 7 ¼” H. Stamped “FROM W. FORBES GROCER GENERAL DEALER INSURANCE AGENT GRIMSBY C.W.” with cobalt highlighting. Overall excellent condition, very minor glazed over kiln / in fire, bumps and scattered light fry to glaze.

LOT #7 Early Stoneware Commode Pot with applied handle standing 6” H. Rare to find with merchant mark! Stamped “MURTON & DUFFIELD GROCERS &C &C YORK ST. HAMILTON C.W.” with cobalt highlighting. Very clean color, 5/8” flake to rim, minor in-firing kiln vertical line to interior, 1 ½” to top of rim.

LOT #8 Stoneware 1 – Gallon Cream Pot, applied handles, with cobalt floral decoration, standing 8 ½” H. Stamped “FROM W. FORBES GROCER & GENERAL DEALER INSURANCE AGENT GRIMSBY C.W.” with cobalt highlighting. Clean with good color, 2 stabilized diagonal lines on back, each 4” long terminating at rim, ½” rim chip at back.

LOT #9 Stoneware 2 Gallon Jug with cobalt brushed and trailed slip flower decoration, standing 13 ½” H. Merchant marked, stamped “FROM WM. W. KITCHEN WINE MAKER & GRAPE GROWER GRIMSBY. W.C. (sic) with cobalt highlighting. Very clean to mottled coloring, perfect handle, minor kiln bump and glaze drip.

LOT #10 Impressive and Important 3 – Gallon Stoneware Butter Crock, c. 1859-67, accented with extremely rare cobalt brushed stencil decoration of “Cow and Ground Cover”, standing 10 ¾” high.  Brantford Pottery mark, stamped “F.P. GOOLD BRANTFORD” highlighted in blue. This rare decoration is known to less than 10 pieces, some in museums! (This piece is illustrated in the book “The Brantford Pottery” by D.B. Webster for the ROM, on page 20 Fig. 7) Excellent overall condition with no chips to rim, ears or body, retains very clean color and appearance, tight vertical 3” hairline behind left ear. The only known example to ever come to auction!

LOT #11 Exceedingly Rare Ontario Stoneware “Presentation” Coin Bank. Front of Bank incised with cobalt-highlighted inscription “POLLY GORTON BELLEVILLE 1885” and 4 radial bands of saw-tooth coggling. Ovid in form, knop finial, carved horizontal coin slot and standing 4 3/8” high. Attributed by timeline and form to the Hart Bros. & Lazier Pottery (1879-1887) Belleville Ontario. Very desirable Bank in impeccable color, condition and surface, not a chip or crack to be seen! Note! Few examples of this bank form exist beyond advanced collections and museums!

LOT #12 Superb and Extremely Rare Miniature/ Salesman Sample Stoneware Jug, just 3 ½” high! Stamped, crisply, clear and to scale “COMPLIMENTS OF WATSON BROS. GUELPH, ONT.”, with cobalt highlighting. Attributed to the W.E. Welding Pottery Brantford, c. 1894-1905. The scaled form is true in all details and in essentially “as-made condition”, PERFECT!  The mid body band is the result of its reversed glazing process. The only example known to ever come to auction!

LOT #13 Extremely Rare, Historically Important and an Iconic “Potter” piece of Prince Edward County Pottery (Picton) History, belonging to and personal to G.I. Lazier! His, Stoneware Shaving Mug, with interior lather brush shelf, standing 5 ¾” high. Stamped crisply on rim, “GEORGE. I. LAZIER”. (C. 1864-1879) In a mottled reddish-brown glaze. Condition, essentially “as-made” PERFECT! A true Museum Piece to any collection!

LOT #14 Extremely Rare Miniature Earthenware/Terra-Cotta Coin Bank, standing 3 7/8” high. C. 1889-1897 pottery mark stamped “J.A. KENNEDY, Brantford, Ont.” Brush decorated in mottled brown slip with carved coin slot and crisp to scale pottery maker’s mark. The “J.A. Kennedy Brantford Ont” Pottery mark is amongst the rarest of all Brantford Factories! The condition is amazingly clean with no chips, there is a crack on back that rings from each end of coin slot, also a crack to bottom terminus of applied handle! Similar example photo in D.L. Newlands “Early Ontario Potters” page 147, image 12.46.

LOT #15 Ontario Redware Hanging Double Wall Pocket / Match Holder, standing 7 ¼” high. This Wall Pocket is extremely rare in utilitarian form, and of being only known example! Both pockets are decorated with applied floral decorations, as well the piece is embellished with overall impressed tooling designs! Found in Bervie Ontario it is attributed to the (John) Brownscombe Pottery located in Kinloss Township, Bruce County. The Wall Pocket is in excellent condition with no cracks, minor flakes at very top left of centre, and left side top of lower pocket as well some minor wear spots. A very desirable addition to any Ontario redware collection!

LOT #16 Miniature Redware Ovoid Jar, standing 4” high (Ex. H. Jarvis Collection) Attributed to Daniel Orth Pottery located in Campden Ontario (Niagara 1851-1902). Purchased directly from Orth Family member in Niagara! The piece has great presence with its orange colored body and mottled yellow glaze. The body, rim and applied lug handles are free of any chips or cracks. There is some glaze loss, most attributed to in-firing

LOT #17 Redware Bowl, 7” in diameter and standing 1 ¾” high. Attributed to Orth Pottery located in Campden Ontario (Niagara 1851-1902) Purchased directly from the Orth Family! Rare utilitarian form with pronounced foot/base details and orange and green splotched glaze coloring. Great condition with no cracks, minor outer rim wear, minor chips and in-firing faults to base. (Ex Harold Jarvis Collection)

LOT #18 Redware Molded Spaniel Dog Coin Bank, standing 9 1/2” high with carved horizontal coin slot. Attributed to Western Ontario Potteries, similar example “Early Canadian Pottery” by D. Webster page 114. Orange ground, brown spattered slip and over glazed. Amazing condition, no cracks or wear, minor ¼” interior flake at base, minor flakes around coin slot.

LOT #19 Rare and Important Signed Ontario Redware Spittoon in molded shell form, 9 1/8” diameter, 4” high. Inscribed and signed on unglazed base by potter “Gus Little”.  Gus (Augustus) Little was a Son of pottery owner Cyrus Little whom operated a pottery in Beamsville Ontario from 1857-1872. Newland makes reference at time of writing his book that “there are no known signed examples from the Little Pottery”! The Spittoon has a very typical Niagara glaze color, being of a light pea green. Very solid condition with no cracks, 1” chip to top and minor flakes to upper rim!

LOT #20 Rare and Pristine 3 – Gallon Ontario Cake Crock or Casserole. A very scarce Ontario pottery “form”, standing 6” high and 14” in diameter, with applied lug handles. The merchant stamp reads “FROM S. ROGERS THE CHEAPEST STORE IN BATH” (Bath Ont. Near Kingston). Made at the Picton pottery of (Samuel) “S. Skinner & Co.” (1855-1864), it has a very clean and centered “Skinner pine tree” cobalt decoration, with cobalt brushed stamp and capacity mark. The total exterior condition is essentially “as made perfect”, not a fault to be found. The Albany slip interior has some minor wear and scratches. This Cake Crock is definitely of “The Best” category of which there are less than 15 known examples!

LOT #21 Extremely Rare and Historical 2 – Gallon Ovoid “Upper Canada” Jug, standing 14” high! This Merchant Jug is stamped “E. LESSLIE & SONS DRUGGISTS TORONTO U.C.”. This extremely ovoid example has a cobalt flower decoration, with cobalt brushed stamp and capacity mark.  As with most early Upper Canada pottery pieces, its maker is attributed to a NY state pottery. The overall condition is “as the day it was made” perfect, with all minor kiln bumps, glaze fry and stone pings, results of in-fire/ kiln process! No chips or cracks! Very few Pottery Collections possess an U.C. piece! This is a rare opportunity to acquire an early piece of Canadian history!

LOT #22   Very Desirable Example of Picton 3 – Gallon Ovid Form Cream Pot/Jar with lug handles, standing 10 ¾” high! Crisp and clear stamp “G.I. LAZIER PICTON, C.W.” (1864-1879). Embellished with bold cobalt slip “Bird on Nest” decoration and brushed cobalt stamp and capacity mark!  In remarkable perfect/as made condition with great overall color, no chips, lines or cracks to exterior! Interior has a light brown Albany slip with ½” minor flake at side at top.

LOT #23 Rare 1 – Gallon Script Crock, standing 7 ½” high. Stamped “G.I. LAZIER PICTON C.W.” (1864-1869). Cobalt trailed personal inscription decoration reads “Berta” (Roberta), attributed to G.I. Lazier Family member. There are less than 10 known Lazier pieces with “name” decoration. The interior is a light brown Albany slip. The Condition is very clean, near as made! No chips or faults to rim or ears, with very faint 2 ½” hairline from rim top, down to incised radial detail. Right side and back have areas of under glazing, results of original in/fire kiln process. A dry point pen description has been written on base.

LOT #24 Very decorative 3 – Gallon Crock standing 10 ¾” high, Stamped “S. SKINNER & CO PICTON C.W.” (1855-1864). Cobalt brush decorated in typical “Skinner Tree” design, with stamp and capacity mark cobalt brushed as well! Interior is a dark brown Albany slip. The condition is excellent, with no chips or cracks to rim, body or lug handles! Very light stains to right side and back. 3/16” kiln stone pop to the right of decoration.  (Ex. “Bill & Pauline Hogan Collection” crock pictured on Cover and page 6 of their 1988 Auction Catalog)

LOT #25 Fabulous Matched Pair of Molded “Spaniel” Dogs in Rockingham Glaze. Each standing 10 ¾” high on integral 5 ½” x 8 ½” hollowed plinth bases. Attributed to “East Liverpool, Ohio Pottery”. Condition is excellent, near to “as made”! Minor ¼” flake to “right” dog, at base, right front corner.

LOT #26 Exceptional Niagara Glazed Redware Cylindrical Jar with rolled shoulder, standing 9 ½” high including lid. Attributed to the John Kulp Pottery (Grimsby). Great coloration with striated/veined red oxide lead glaze over olive ground. Jar is essentially in “as made” condition! The tooled finial lid has a ¾” chip to top of lid.

LOT #27 Exceptional and Historical Prince Edward Island marked Redware 1 – Gallon Jug, standing 10 ¾” high!  Stamped in a rectangular canted corner frame “P.E.I. POTTERY” This Pottery was started by Frederick Hyndman in 1880 and was sold in 1886. This Redware Jug has, and illustrates design elements not found on other early Canadian redware, including incised decorative handle, stamped capacity mark and cartouche pottery stamp! The surface covered in clear lead glaze over sponged manganese olive green and brown ground.  The condition is near very good with minor glaze scuffs, 3 minor flakes to base and hairline at base in front extending through pottery stamp.  

LOT #28 Colorful Ontario Redware Jug, 1 Gallon size, standing 11” tall. This piece exhibits a heavy lead glaze over spattered and veined manganese dark olive over tan ground. The condition is excellent, “as made”, with very minor firing/in kiln flaws, no cracks or chips!

LOT #29 Glazed Redware Cylinder Jar of Ontario origin, Quart size with finial topped lid, standing 7” high.  Surface covered in heavy lead glaze over sponged grayish green and brown ground. Condition is solid with no cracks to jar or lid. Chips, flakes, some kiln faults.

LOT #30 Glazed Redware Jug of Ontario origin, ½ – Gallon size, standing 7 ¾” high. Surface covered in heavy lead glaze over pea green ground. Very solid condition, no cracks to body or applied handle, minor glaze flakes at base, areas of glaze thinning and loss during firing.

LOT #31 Glazed Redware Jug of Ontario origin with beautiful color, 1 Gallon size, standing 11” high. With heavy lead glaze over manganese green/dark green ground with orange spotting. The piece is solid with no cracks, minor scuff marks, chip on top of lip, chipping and scaling/loss to base.

LOT #32 Glazed Redware Ovoid Jar of 19th c. Ontario origin, standing 8 ½” high. Surface covered in heavy lead glaze over dark olive-green and orange ground. Solid condition, no cracks or chips, subtle wear and scuff marks, very minor kiln pops. Very eye pleasing example!

LOT #33 Great 1878, 6 – Gallon Stoneware Butter Churn, standing 19 ¼” high. Stamped “G.I. LAZIER PICTON C.W.”, (c. 1864 – 1879). Cobalt slip “flower” and date “1878” decoration, and cobalt brushed manufacture and capacity mark, with dark brown Albany slip interior. Condition is excellent, no, chips, cracks, staining or kiln faults!

LOT #34 Very Rare, Historical Quebec 2 Gallon Cream Pot, standing 10” high. With scarce pottery mark stamped “ORRIN L. BALLARD ST. JOHN’S C. E.”. Cobalt flower, slip decorated with brushed cobalt capacity and makers marks. The overall condition is very good, no chips to body or lug handles, (2) 3/16” chips on outer edge of rim at back, 3” hairline at back from rim down, internal 1 ¼” hairline from top of rim at front, but does not extend to front face, and 1”  external hairline on rim above right lug handle that does not a

LOT #35 Large Floral Decorated Ontario 5 – Gallon Churn, standing 16 ¼” high, with applied lug handles. Pottery mark stamped “N. EBERHARDT TORONTO O”. Decorated with exceptional cobalt slip and brushed flower, slip trailed “5” and dark brown Albany slip interior. Condition is very solid with no cracks, no chips to lug handles or body, 1” chip to back side of collar, subtle signs of wear, very faint staining and minor kiln pops.

LOT #36 Rare Decorated 3 – Gallon Stoneware Crock, standing 10 ¾” high, with applied lug handles. Pottery mark stamped “CORNWALL POTTERY C.W.” (Orrin Ballard,1864-1869).  Rare Cobalt decoration with cluster of grapes design.  Sound Condition includes faint hairline from rim through right lug handle, faint hairline through pottery mark, no chips to body, lug handles or collar!

LOT #37 Rare Ontario Stoneware Beehive Form, Poultry Waterer, 1 Gallon size, with integral saucer, standing 11 ½” high. Clearly stamped and brushed in cobalt “W.E. WELDING BRANTFORD, ONT.” (c. 1873-1894.) In Very Good condition, super clean clay color, no cracks or chips to body, rim chips (3) to lip of integral saucer.

LOT #38 Very Good Ontario Stoneware 2 Gallon Cream Pot with accompanying lid that’s stamped “2” (Gallons) as well, and lug handles.  Standing 10 ¾” high, stamped “FLACK & VAN ARSDALE CORNWALL ONT.” Decorated with typical Flack stylized cobalt slip decorated “Bird on branch” design.  Condition is very good, with no cracks or chips to body or rim, small flakes on ears, decoration has areas of subtle fry.

LOT #39 Excellent Ontario Glazed Redware Jug, found outside of Owen Sound Ontario, standing 14” high (approx. 2 Gal. size).  Clear lead glaze over a colorful variation of orange and green ground. Overall condition is excellent with great color, no cracks or chips to body, 3/8” glaze flake to edge of spout, minor kiln bumps and glaze loss.

LOT #40 Colorful Ontario Glazed Ovid Redware Jar in diminutive size, standing 6 ¾” high. Heavy lead glaze over colorful green and orange ground, inside and out! Condition is excellent, no cracks, some area of glaze loss to collar, minor in-kiln firing faults and under-glazing, 1 small chip to base.

LOT #41 Ontario Glazed Redware Jug (½ Gallon size) standing 9” high. Heavy lead manganese speckled glaze over green, orange ground.  Excellent condition overall, solid, no cracks or chips, small glaze flake on edge of spout.

LOT #42 Ontario Glazed Ovid Redware Jar standing 8 ¼” high. Lead glaze over a fine speckled orange and dark olive-green ground inside and out! Excellent Condition, no cracks, small flake to top of rim.

LOT #43 Large Ontario Glazed Redware Ovoid Jar standing 11 3/8” high. Heavy manganese veined glaze over green and dark orange ground, inside and out! Excellent Condition, no cracks, no chips, minor edge flakes to rim.

LOT #44 Ontario Glazed Earthenware Jar with rolled shoulder and high neck, with original lid, standing 9 ½” tall! Light lead glaze over solid terra-cotta colored ground. Condition is excellent, solid body with no chips or cracks, very faint 1” hairline at base. Lid has very minor edge flakes.

LOT #45 Ontario Glazed Redware Pitcher with incised/tooled strap handle and pronounced foot, standing 8 ½” high! Typical Ontario Germanic form from last half of 19th century. Heavy lead glazed surface over green and brown ground. Condition is solid, no cracks, subtle signs of wear to glaze, rim flake to right of spout and some minor roughness to base!

LOT #46 Ontario Finely Glazed Earthenware Ovoid Jar, thin walled, standing 9” high! Surface covered lead glaze over orange (subtle pink hue) ground, with yellow spotting! Excellent condition, great visuals, very clean, with no cracks, minor rim wear and small rim flake.

LOT #47 Glazed Redware Jug, slight ovoid shape, tooled pronounced foot detail, standing 10” high. Lead glaze over dark brown ground with purple hue. Condition is very good, clean, no cracks, small flakes on spout and body (minimal), and small kiln stone-pops.

LOT #48 Glazed Redware Ovoid Jar of Ontario-German influence with pronounced rim, standing 11 ½” high. Iron oxide glaze with orange spotting over dark olive-green ground. Condition is solid with no cracks, good color, small chip to inner rim and flake at bottom.

LOT #49 Early Ovoid Jug, very pronounced bulbous form, standing 7 ½” high: Light speckled iron glaze over brown ground. Condition is very good, sound, no cracks, a couple of very minor flakes and kiln stone pops!

LOT #50 Very Rare Niagara Stoneware 4 Gallon Merchant Crock, standing 11 ¼” high. Crisply stamped “NIDLE & MC-GILLVERY PORT-COLBORN” (sic), 1 of 3 known! Attributed to G.I. Lazier Pottery, Picton (1864-1879) Decorated with Cobalt stylized “Running Bird with Foliage Embellishments” typical Lazier decoration! Condition is very solid with no cracks or chips, overall staining!

LOT #51 Rare Stoneware 1 Gallon Script Crock, standing 7 3/8” high! Stamped “PICTON C.W.” Attributed to G.I Lazier Pottery, Picton (1864-1879). Cobalt script decoration reads “ELIZA” and numeral “1”! Condition is very clean, small flake on right lug handle, 2 stabilized vertical cracks starting at rim.

LOT #52 Scarce Stoneware 4 Gallon Crock, double marked with Pottery Mfg. stamp and Merchant mark, standing 11 ½” high. Stamped and cobalt brushed “B.S. MFG.CO. LTD. BRANTFORD” and stencil marked “THE MAMOTH STORE HAGER & HALL BEAMSVILLE”! Condition is very solid, no chips, one very light vertical hairline from rim, overall light staining.

LOT #53 Niagara 2 Gallon Stoneware Jug, standing 12 ½” high. Stamped “FROM W. FORBES GROCER & GENERAL DEALER INSURANCE AGENT GRIMSBY C.W. Cobalt brushed and slip flower and stylized “2” decoration. Condition is very solid, no cracks or chips with area of subtle discoloration.

LOT #54 Ontario Redware Spittoon, molded shell pattern, with pronounced foot, picked in Niagara, 9 ½” diameter and 4” high. Heavy green glaze over orange and brown ground. Condition is essentially “as made” with 1 small flake at foot/base.

LOT #55 Historical Lot (18 pcs.) of Kiln Furniture and Shards from the “John Kulp Pottery” Grimsby Mountain site, dig, Grimsby, by early Pottery Collectors “Jean & Harold Jarvis”

LOT #56 Scarce, Early 20th C. Ontario Redware Birdhouse with tooled helical designs to finialed roof and canted base! Standing 12 ½” high in green glaze over brown ground. Condition is solid, no cracks, areas of under-glazing, some areas of minor wear, chip at back, to base.

LOT #57 Brantford Glazed Stoneware Creamer, with molded floral details, standing 6 ¾” high. Stamped on base “CANADA (over) BRANTFORD”. Light clear glaze over hues of green and blue base.  Condition is “as day made”, no chips or cracks with areas of subtle crackular.

LOT #58 (2-piece lot) Rockingham Glazed Stoneware Bowl, footed, molded with ribs, 9” diameter, and stamped “BRANTFORD CANADA”, hairline at bottom. Bennington Glazed Stoneware Soap Dish, 5” long with molded details and integral drain, in excellent condition!
